The Jugra Connection
This Datuk resides near Bukit Jugra, on the west coast of Malaysia, at the mouth of the Langat River. The image of the hills behind him reflects the importance of that area to Malaysian history. The Jugra hill was a landmark for early travellers to the peninsula and was home to the first Sultan of Selangor. Boats arriving from Indonesia and other places were expected to stop at Jugra to get the blessing of the Sultan before proceeding to other parts of the peninsula. Datuk worship is very prevalent in the area in keeping with this early tradition of paying respects to the ruler. This Datuk may be of Indian decent, maybe a trader or money lender who helped newcomers.
